Philip Marris explains the implementation of the "2 for 1" rule in production and project environments

 

The "2 for 1" rule can either be applied in production management or in project management. Before using Thoery of Constraints to boost the performance of a production line or to accelerate the execution of a portfolio of projects with the Critical Chain methodology, it is often needed to the relieve the system from the work-in-progress (WIP) burden beforehand. Thanks to WIP reduction, waiting queues become shorter and the flow is naturally improved.

 

WIP increases when launches of raw materials or new projects are more frequent than the deliveries of finished goods or finished projects. The aim is then to prevent the buildup of WIP in the system and the "2 for 1" rule simply states that "it is forbidden to launch one new unit into the system before two units come out of the system". During the 19th edition  of TOCICO International Conference, Philip Marris presented in 30 minutes the fundamental principles of the "2 for 1" rule implementation and supported his explanation with relevant examples he encountered in his career.
