Critical Chain in aeronautical maintenance (MRO) The world of projects when every minute counts

By Philip Marris

Critical Chain is already widely used worldwide in the maintenance (MRO) of aircraft whether commercial or military and has produced extraordinary results in Turn Around Time reductions and productivity. We explain why this industry was a pioneer and share the lessons learnt by all the actors these past 20 years.

Marris Consulting has had the pleasure of assisting many aeronautical MRO organisations (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul): Air France, Embraer, Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace, Dassault, Sabca, ABS Jets,  Revima, Safran, ...

Conference summary

Critical Chain is now widely used in aeronautical maintenance (MRO or Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul / Operations). The United States Air Force, with the world's largest fleet of aircraft, is in the process of deploying it worldwide, and several airlines around the world have adopted it.
The webinar lists over 30 aeronautical MRO cases worldwide, from the USA to Australia and from Brazil to France.

In this webinar, we present our lessons learned after a brief contextualization of the industry and an explanation of certain specificities, including the ease of calculating a return on investment. In MRO, an extra day  of downtime is quickly worth hundreds of thousands of euros. Companies in this sector know better than anyone that time is money (or mission-critical for military aircraft). Critical Chain and the results it achieves therefore make it an obvious solution.

Some key points:

  • There are often too many aircrafts in maintenance simultaneously (not enough focus)

  • Planning and scheduling skills often need to be reinforced

  • Critical Chain provides exceptional visibility on the progress of each aircraft

  • Spare parts availability is a prerequisite for success

  • The use of Work Packages and a 2-level scheduling facilitate execution management and avoid falling into the trap of micromanagement
  • Identifying "findings" (unplanned extra work due to unexpected deterioration) becomes even more crucial

  • Visits are often divided into 2 stages: a first stage of dismantling and testing to identify findings, and a second stage to carry out the necessary work.

Philip Marris Bio

Philip Marris began his Theory Of Constraints journey in 1986, when he worked with Eliyahu Goldratt, founder of the Theory Of Constraints (TOC) and author of the best-seller The Goal. Philip is the author of a French bestseller about TOC, Le Management Par les Contraintes. He is bilingual and bi-cultural French/English and lives in Paris.

He founded Marris Consulting in 2005, whose activity is mainly based on the implementation of TOC and its various applications, such as Critical Chain, combined with various approaches such as Agile and Lean. He has implemented this approach over 300 times in more than 30 countries worldwide. His clients include Air France, l'Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace, Embraer, Safran, McDonalds, Siemens, GSK and Ariane Group. Critical Chain represents around half of Marris Consulting's assignments.

About Marris Consulting

Marris Consulting is an industry consulting and training company specialized in the Theory of Constraints (ToC) and Critical Chain Project Management. We focus on improving the performance of manufacturing and process industries by using Constraints Management combined with Lean and Six Sigma. To boost project performance, we also use Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), which we sometimes combine with Lean Engineering. Our 2-day performance audits, our performance consulting services and our project management, Lean, ToC & CCPM training by our industry consultants offer a wide range of solutions to help our clients around the world reach the highest possible levels of performance.
