Critical Chain Project Management to reduce Time To Market and increase productivity
Article STP Pharma Pratiques, September-October 2011
Critical chain Project Management (CCPM) is a relatively new approach to project management that is part of the Thoery Of Constraints approach and that has demonstrated over the past 10 years its ability to significantly reduce the duration of projects, to ensure that projects are completed on time, and to increase resource productivity.
This article is focused on the Pharmaceutical sector but its message is relevant to all new product development.
CCPM has been successfully used to reduce the time to market of new pharmaceutical products especially in the United States. Today, Europe is beginning to implement this approach. Drug development costs are of the order of one billion euro and take about ten years. Generic products invade the initially captive market as soon as the patents expire. We spend more and earn less. An approach such as the Critical Chain, which can reduce the product development time by as much as 40 % while increasing the productivity of resources is therefore particularly relevant.
Marris Consulting is an industry consulting and training company specialized in the Theory of Constraints (ToC) and Critical Chain Project Management. We focus on improving the performance of manufacturing and process industries by using Constraints Management combined with Lean and Six Sigma. To boost project performance, we also use Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM), which we sometimes combine with Lean Engineering. Our 2-day performance audits, our performance consulting services and our project management, Lean, ToC & CCPM training by our industry consultants offer a wide range of solutions to help our clients around the world reach the highest possible levels of performance.
