The Theory of Constraints was made known through the novel The Goal written by Eliyahu Goldratt. This novel from the 80's is still relevant and many companies try to implement the Theory of Constraints or the constraint management in their organisation. 

The starting point of the Theory of Constraints is that every system is unbalanced: there is somewhere a bottleneck with less capacity. From this postulate the Theory of Constraints comes with a flow management method: the Drum Buffer Rope (DBR). For operation managers that want to boost their operational performance, it is also possible to implement the 5 Focusing Steps also known as the processus of ongoing improvement.
