Definition and purpose of the Goal Tree
A 2-minute explanation by Bill Dettmer
The objective of the Goal Tree is to answer the first fundamental question of the Logical Thinking Process in order to solve your systemic problem:
- What is expected?
- What should your system achieve?
This tree is based on the logic "In order to..., the system must...". Therefore, the tree must be built from top to bottom. First, the goal must be clearly defined, then come the critical success factors and finally the main necessary supporting conditions.
A solid Goal Tree ensures that you focus your efforts only on the elements that bring value to your system and that you do not waste your time and resources on "unimportant" elements.
