TOC 5 Focusing Steps Revisited

The TOC 5 Focusing Steps Revisited - Clarke Ching interview extract

Clarke Ching and Philip Marris share their experience of Theory Of Constraints.

In this short video, Clarke Ching asks Philip Marris How his TOC journey started, so he shares his experience in the industry, where he discovered what is called "lean manufacturing", before creating, a few years later, his own consulting company.

Designing and Creating things it’s what Philip enjoys to do and He says that that's what TOC and Lean does because they help in the transformation of the way people design and create things.

Philip Marris explains his point of view about the Theory Of Constraints’ 5 Focusing Steps. He argues that they are sufficient in an initial implementation of TOC but that they must later be replaced with a process that aims to organize the system around the “best” constraint or “best” bottleneck.

After this introduction, We hear the revised edition of Theory of Constrains by Philip Marris which are the following:

 0. Define the Goal

  1. Identify the system constraint
  2. Decide how to Exploit the constraint
  3. Subordinate everything else to the above decision
  4. Elevate the systems constraint but
  5. WARNING! If in the previous steps a constraint has been broken, go back to step 1, but do not allow INERTIA to cause a systems constraint.

Marris Consulting, expert in Theory of Constraints & Critical Chain Project Management

Marris Consulting is an expert in the Theory of Constraints (ToC) and Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM). As industry consultants, we are focused on helping process and manufacturing industries reach their highest levels of performance by using Constraints Management  combined with Lean and Six Sigma. We also use Critical Chain Project Management which we sometimes combine with Lean engineering to improve project performance. If you are unsure about the actions which need to be implemented to improve operational efficiency, our industrial management consultants can also conduct a performance audit. Furthermore, our experts host numerous Theory of Constraints (ToC), lean and project management training sessions throughout the year.
