Do not confuse bottlenecks and problems

"Wandering bottlenecks" do not really exist...


Among the numerous assignments where Philip Marris was involved, he states that he has hardly ever encountered any real "wandering bottlenecks". However, his clients are often convinced of the existence of such constraints at the beginning of our action plans. In reality in these cases, the leaders (production or plant directors) had the illusion of identifying the right bottleneck when they faced important punctual or chronic problems. As a reminder, according to the Theory of Constraints, the constraint of the system is the the resource that has, on average, a capacity equal to or less than the demand placed upon it. The 5 "focusing steps", presented in The Goal, are specific to Bottleneck management and are not at all suitable to solve these spotted punctual or chronic issues.
