The Theory of Constraints' continuous improvement process


In this short video, Philip Marris presents the 5 steps to improve any organization's performance. This process, called the 5 Focusing Steps, aims at targetting the improvement initiatives at the right place, at the right moment.


Here are the 5 steps to follow:

  1. Identify the constraint
  2. Exploit the constraint: Focus all of your company's resources on this resource to produce more.
  3. Subordinate the rest of the company's activity to what could be the bottleneck
  4. Elevate the expenditure of money to produce more
  5. Repeat the process


This puts forward the 2 main advantages of the Theory of Constraints: focus the improvement process on the items which hurt the most your performance, to get results quickly, and focus on growth instead of cost killing.


Don't spread thin your efforts to improve industrial performance, focus on the right issues following these 5 steps.
