We are often asked the question: can the tool called VSM, Value Stream Mapping, be used to identify a company's bottleneck?
Used to optimize processes and flows, whether physical or informative, by reducing times with no added value, the VSM identifies blocking points and slowdowns to be resolved in the flow in order to improve performance, but does it really identify the bottleneck?
Philip Marris answers this question in this short video by taking the analogy of constraints in the project environment (single-project versus project portfolio), the constraint of a flow is not necessarily the constraint of all flows, of the company.
