Toyota became famous because of the quality of their products. In this interview, Reynald Debaut-Henocque, former vice president of manufacturing at Toyota Motor Manufacturing France, recount his first experience at Toyota when he started as head of Quality.
When the factory opened in the late 90's, the goal was to be manufacture a Toyota Yaris with a quality level at least as good as the Yaris that was produced in Japan and that had just been awarded the title of "car of the year". This level of quality was reached a few years later and the French factory as maintained its quality level even though the vehicles version evolved.
In this video Reynal explains Toyota's way of keeping a very high level of quality. While some companies measure their percentage of defect, Toyota measures its defects per million.
