Goldratt's Rules of Flow, a business novel by Efrat Goldratt-Ashlag

In this novel, considered a sequel to the book Critical Chain written by his father Eliyahu GOldratt, Efrat Goldratt-Ashlag chooses to treat project management by taking a "flow" approach.

Starting from the premise that projects cross all departments of a company and therefore constitute a flow, Efrat demonstrates in this novel how the fact of reducing or even eliminating the obstacles to the flow allows projects to be completed more quickly.

The reader follows Marc Wilson, director of the Engineering department of the company I.T. Wilson Advanced Solutions, a company that is experiencing difficulties, particularly in meeting project delivery deadlines for its customers, and which has just lost a major customer.

In order to find a solution and avoid the sale of the company by his father, Marc Wilson enrolls in the "Rules of Flow" course of an MBA program for business executives. The course, taught by Professor Richard Silver, will allow him to discover simple rules of project management and learn how to put them into practice in order to save his company.

Without claiming to be exhaustive, Efrat offers 8 flow rules to improve project performance. Among these rules:

  • Avoid bad multitasking, control your Work in Progress

  • Abolish local optimum, global optimum is what matters
  • Triage to ensure you are working on the right priorities
