The Theory of Constraints and the Critical Chain to meet the challenges of Engineering-To-Order

Whatever the industry, custom design (Engineering To Order / ETO) and non-repetitive production companies face several challenges:

  • A high degree of personalization in customer request,
  • Low repeatability requiring great reactivity/flexibility,
  • The need to synchronize several flows of information and material,
  • The difficulty in coordinating all external and internal actors,
  • Ever more ambitious deadlines to face competition and respond to market demand.

In this webinar, Philip Marris and Etienne Lecerf present how the implementation of the Theory Of Constraints and Critical Chain Project Management makes it possible to respond to these issues and leads to impressive results through case studies.

Example of an assembly workshop

The Critical Chain, an innovative project management approach, allows Engineering-to-Order players to:

  • Identify the causes of delays and waste and target continuous improvement actions,
  • And therefore, reduce business delivery times,
  • Identify a potential capacity constraint (or bottleneck),
  • Better manage project management and staff workload,
  • Reduce stress levels at all levels of the organization.

At the same time, the Theory of Constraints, particularly through the 5 “Focusing Steps” can be relevant at different places in the company to:

  • Increase production volumes,
  • Accelerate assembly operations,
  • Increase the throughput of design work,
  • Reduce work in progress in offices and workshops.

Some examples of the results obtained through several implementation cases:

  • 40% reduction in the design phase,
  • Improvement of On-Time-Delivery (OTD) from 40% to 100%,
  • Reduction of delivery times from 50 weeks to 10 weeks,
  • Increased design office output flow by more than 100%.

About the speakers: Philip Marris & Etienne Lecerf

Philip started his Theory Of Constraints journey in 1986 when he joined Creative Output and worked with Eliyahu Goldratt, the founder of TOC and author of the worldwide bestseller “The Goal”. In 1994 he wrote a bestselling TOC textbook in French.

He is also a recognized Lean expert and combines Lean (Manufacturing/Engineering/Management) with TOC. He founded Marris Consulting based in Paris France in 2005.

Half of Marris Consulting's business is outside of France in Europe and the rest of the world. He is bilingual and bi-cultural French/English. He is very active in the TOC community.
