The Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) approach requires defining short, focused durations for individual tasks. How do you do this if you are just beginning your CCPM journey?
If you are not careful there will be an up front rejection of the Critical Chain approach. After all, it is true, but misleading, to say that CCPM enables you to do you projects in half the time…and that it does this by using task durations that are about half of what they used to be!
Those tempted by Critical Chain or those starting their CCPM journey legitimately worry about how they can obtain these short task durations from their colleagues. Philip Marris explains how you can get your organization to propose very short task durations and how these proposed “focused durations” will be volunteered by the project actors themselves, thereby ensuring good buy-in to the Critical Chain approach.
He also explain why it is not necessary for these new task duration estimates to be correct, only that they must be shorter than they used to be, and how the task durations can then be further shortened year after year.
It is quite easy to get your teams to propose task durations that are much shorter than they used to be. This presentation explains how.
Philip started his Theory Of Constraints journey in 1986 when he joined Creative Output and worked with Eliyahu Goldratt, the founder of TOC and author of the worldwide bestseller “The Goal”. In 1994 he wrote a bestselling TOC textbook in French that explains how to implement TOC in manufacturing.
He is also a recognized Lean expert and combines Lean (Manufacturing/Engineering/Management) with TOC. He founded Marris Consulting based in Paris, France, in 2005.
Half of Marris Consultig's business is outside of France in Europe and the rest of the world. He is bilingual and bi-cultural French/English. He is very active in the TOC community. He has implemented TOC over 300 times in over 30 countries.
