TOCICO conference about Critical Chain

TOCICO conference about Critical Chain

Critical Chain has enabled thousands of projects to significantly and sustainably improve productivity.  Typical improvements:  25%-100% increase in productivity; durations -20-70%.  And, simultaneously, due-date hits 95% plus.

This is the first inaugural conference organized by the official global TOC association dedicated to Critical Chain Project Management. Dozens of presentations by practitioners: Embraer (PMI winner of the best project of the year 2019), Tata Steel, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Centurion Systems, Endress+Hauser, Telefonica Brazil, Megara, Safran, Diamond Aircraft, etc.

5 recent examples of Critical Chain used in a variety of industries. Gold mining: large Capex project; process maintenance and mobile equipment MRO. Business Jet maintenance: boosting the performance of the market leader. Pharmaceutical industry: large Capex project and multiple process upgrades. Arterial implants world leader: the portfolio of all their major improvement initiatives. Covid-19 respiratory tests: speeding up product development to save lives.

Philip Marris started his Theory Of Constraints (TOC) journey in 1986 when he worked with Eliyahu Goldratt the founder of TOC and author of “The Goal”. He founded Marris Consulting in 2003 whose business is nearly always TOC based. He also integrates many other approaches, especially PMI’s PMBOK, Agile and Lean. He has implemented TOC over 260 times in over 20 different countries. He has for instance assisted: Embraer, McDonalds, Siemens, GSK, Air France, Safran and Ariane rockets. Half of Marris Consulting’s assignments are Critical Chain implementations. He is the author of a bestselling TOC textbook in French. He is bilingual and bi-cultural French/English and lives in Paris, France.

Complete factory layout change in 6.5 days!

By Guillaume Brethenoux, Head of Infrastructure and Operational Maintenance at Safran.

Guillaume Brethenoux

Safran Electronics & Defense (SAE) in Mantes-la-Ville is a factory of 300 people that make Flight Control Systems. They have 2 main production departments: Machining and Assembly. The facility initially had a low level of OTD (On Time Delivery); less than 50%. So, huge amounts of work-in-progress, inability to give reliable delivery dates to customers, management team busy firefighting …

Convinced that the situation was critical, they  decided to deploy Theory of Constraints. This reduced the Work In Progress by over 85%. They then decided to change the plant layout, simplifying the production flow and organizing machines by product families. The target of the new layout was to help in further reduce lead times, simplifying the flow of parts and increasing global productivity… Around 48 machines needed to be moved without disturbing the production flow.

Guillaume Brethenoux, Maintenance Manager in charge of this project used the Critical Chain Project Management approach to challenge the initial planning of 5 weeks and eventually achieve the reengineering of the shop floor in… 6,5 days!

Guillaume Brthenoux. From June 2020 - Head of Infrastructure and Operational Maintenance at Safran Aerosystems. July 2014- June 2020: Industrial Maintenance and General Services Manager at Safran Electronic & Defense. November 2011 – July 2014: Maintenance Manager at Groupe Renault: October 2000 – January 2004: Co-Design of gearbox Pilot - PSA Peugeot Citroën. During 20 years, Guillaume Brethenoux, an INSA ROUEN Engineer, gathered experience in automotive industry at PSA Peugeot Citroen then with Groupe Renault as Maintenance Manager. He joined the Safran Group in 2014.
