The growing pertinence of the Theory of Constraints combined with Good Lean

The world companies operate in is changing faster and faster: new products and technologies, new competitors, new client expectations ... So the product and services we need to provide changes rapidly all the time and forecasts are less and less reliable. Yet the speed with which we can adapt our capacities and capabilities has not improved much in the past 50 years; it still takes us several months or years to choose, buy and install new equipment or to hire and train our key staff. So we can no longer install the right capacities in each of the part of our company any more. We will either have insufficient capacity or excess capacity. Company budgets that claim this is not true have become a real danger. We will inexorably have bottlenecks and non-bottlenecks. So we need to adapt our way of managing to this new reality. We need the Theory Of Constraints.

Since the 1950s Toyota built first a “Production System” and later this morphed into a “Management System”; the “Toyota Way”. This has conquered most of operations throughout the world especially in the production process. It has spread from making cars, to making aircraft, to managing hospitals or to managing start-ups. Lean is everywhere. And “Good Lean” should be everywhere. Good Lean is many things but notably it is: a focus on flow; waste hunting and respect for people. What makes this difficult to understand is that most organisations have implemented “Bad Lean” a vague resemblance to the original Toyota Way that looks more like a process of continually reducing headcount using Japanese words.

This conference will argue that the best approach for the times we live in is to combine the Theory Of Constraints with good Lean.

Bio - Philip Marris

Philip is a recognized Theory Of Constraints worldwide expert with more than 30 years of TOC experience. He started working with the founder father of TOC, Eliyahu Goldratt in 1986. He has also a similar long experience with Lean.

One of his feats of arms was to significantly improve a production line of leanest organizations in the world, after Toyota, in a matter of minutes. He did this merging TOC and Lean.

Philip helped over 200 companies in all industrial sectors during his more than 25 years of experience as consultant. Philip founding Marris Consulting in 2004, the company is based in Paris, France and its motto is: Factories, People & Results.

Philip is the host of this 38^th TOCPA conference, the first in France.
