Theory of Constraints applied to New Products Development

Critical Chain Project Management has been successfully applied to New Product Development for over 25 years now. What are the results, the lessons learnt and the limits?

TOCICO 2024

Hundreds of thousands of New Product Development (NPD) projects have been managed the Critical Chain Way for all kinds of products and services. Mazda uses it. Embraer was awarded the PMI’s Project of the Year Award for breaking records with it. More recently, BAE Systems is in the process of a global roll-out applying it to ships, tanks, and submarines. What are the results? What are the lessons learnt?

This presentation will attempt to summarize what we have learnt these past 27 years.

  • How CCPM applies to both individual projects and to project portfolios.
  • How it enables reductions in durations of 30% to 60%.
  • How, combined with the Theory Of Constraints’ 5 Focusing Steps, it generates increases in productivity of 40% to 80%.

We will restate that one of the keys to success is the reduction of the quantity of Work In Progress and the reduction in multi-tasking. The problems encountered when there are subcontracted operations. How to deal with date constraints (with a subcontractor or with a trade fair). How CCPM fits into a 3-level control pyramid to manage all horizons from long term to daily execution. How one can combine CCPM with other approaches such as Agile, Lean Engineering. How doing NPD projects much faster improves the quality of the product and enables better manufacturability. How the Fever Chart provides incredible visibility and changes the focus of attention to the beginning of projects thereby limiting firefighting.
