Conference TOC by Philip Marris, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 25th - 26th May 2017

The conference

The conference took place the 25th-26th May 2017 in Saint Petersburg, Russia

Too many people consider that the Theory of Constraints, Lean and Six Sigma are incompatible. They think that you have to choose between them.

In this conference, we argue that on the contrary, they are a great combination. ToC can be used to identify the constraint of an organization and Lean and/or Six Sigma can then be used to improve the constraint’s performance and this will directly impact the overall performance of the organization.

By staying focused, the impact of Lean and Six Sigma initiatives is significantly boosted. Several case studies have been presented.

TLS masterclass

Theory of Constraints + Lean +Six Sigma: learning to mix the perfect cocktail

TLS is the acronym for combining ToC, Lean, Six Sigma so as to build a business management tailored to the needs of each individual company. This masterclass has mixed TLS theory and practice. Over a dozen cases from Philip Marris’ 25 years of experience in many varied industries have been used to show how the ideas – the “theory” – should be applied.

Examples come from process industries, aeronautics, fast food restauration, building rockets, automotive, industrial machinery, Maintenance Repair and Overhaul … They cover high volume repetitive industries, medium or small batch production, non-repetitive / project environments, Engineering To Order, Make To Order, large multi-nationals, medium sized corporations and small organizations.

The concepts of each approach has been summarized. Theory of Constraints: 5 focussing steps, DBR, S-DBR, CCPM, TPs, LTPs, Replenishment Solution, Throughput Accounting … Lean: flow as a foundation, waste elimination, Kanban, SMEDSix Sigma: minimizing variations and instability, design of experiments, black/green belt system …

To better understand the opportunities and obstacles of TLS, each of the three approaches has been presented in a contrasted way: good ToC, bad ToC, good Lean, bad Lean, good Six Sigma and bad Six Sigma.

Participants have been able to discuss with Philip Marris what combination might be best suited to their company and how best to implement the appropriate changes.
