In his presentation, Philip Marris explains why and how the Theory of Constraints (TOC) is relevant for entrepreneurs, whether they are in a startup or an SME. Every organization, every company, has a constraint: a resource whose capacity is lower than that of the other resources and which therefore limits the overall performance. Identifying the constraint and focusing managerial attention on it is the approach advocated by the Theory of Constraints (TOC).

This approach was popularized by Eliyahu Goldratt's bestselling book The Goal, which has sold more than 11 million copies and has been translated into over 30 languages. However, the book presents the case of an engine manufacturing plant. In his presentation, Philip Marris  explains how this approach can be applied in service organizations. A summarized version of the fundamentals of this the Theory of Constraints approach is illustrated by two different case studies.

Case #1: The case of a French insurance company that applied TOC to significantly improve its productivity and dramatically accelerate its claims management services.

Case #2: The case of an eight-person startup that has since grown to more than 100 employees. The company provides outsourced services for processing U.S. companies' sales tax filings, where regulations vary from one state to another, making monthly filings quite complex.
